The RV Forum has met in Moab, UT for a spring rally for the past 8 years while everyone works their way north as the weather improves in the northern states. Maob is located between Canyonlands and Arches National Parks in Southeast Utah. The temperatures here are in the eighties and the weather has been delightful. It is a very busy time of year for the area including a jeep rally that just ended and a large car show in town this weekend. The fire engine was enroute to Moab at a rest stop on the way down from Salt Lake City.
Another unusual vehicle at the rest area headed for Moab was this German RV/Bus. The occupants spend the day up front on a tour bus but each of the windows is a sleeping cubicle for each passenger. They spend the nights in campgrounds and cook most of their meals while on the road. it is quite popular with German tourists, we also met another of these units in Mexico this winter.
The group enjoys off road trips up into the canyons, jet boat trips on the Colorado and the camaraderie of fellow Forum members. We spent yesterday on a trip up the Shafer Trail to Canyonlands National Park. The scenery is breathtaking, especially when you are standing on the rim looking down!
The approach to the Trail is through a Potash Mining area. The mineral is extracted by using water injection to create a slurry that is pumped into pools to evaporate leaving Potash for use in several applications including fertilizer. The Colorado River winds through the canyons that have been created by water and wind erosion over millions of years.
After several stops for photos we took a lunch break under a cliff of statuesque columns that overlook the trail.
Coming up out of the Canyon is a good climb that is done by everyone including bikers although we did meet more bicyclist coming down the trail than we did going up! The view made the climb well worthwhile!
