Getting High on the 4th of July

We chose the White Mountain area of east central New Hampshire to get off the roads for the 4th weekend since we had been to North Conway 20 years ago and knew there was a lot to do in the area. Of course it was just coincidence that the area is home to a large number of outlet stores.
The Saco River Campground was very crowded over the fourth but was a nice campground lying along the banks of the Saco River within walking distance of the south side shopping areas of North Conway. On the 4th we drove the Auto Road to the top Mt Washington, the highest point in the eastern US at 6288 feet. The temperatures were in the 50's on top, quite a contrast to the mid eighties in North Conway.
Our weekend was also spent visiting the Franconia Notch area including hiking up to see the Flume and driving through the beautiful areas of the White Mountain National Forest. We also came upon our first roadside moose in the lower 48 states on our way home one day. The young moose was content to eat and ignore the tourists trying to have an accident when they realized what we were all stopped for!On the 5th we finally entered Maine as we headed to the Portland/Freeport area for dinner on the upper deck of Dimillo's Floating Restaurant in Portland and an afternoon and morning of shopping in Freeport at LL Bean and all the other stores. Sue finally chose her birthday/anniversary present, a new Tourmaline ring from a Freeport jeweler. We are now up in central Maine at Canaan for a family reunion this weekend.
