Day 46 North Pole Alaska

Our last morning at the Chena Marina RV Park was another beautiful scene of tranquility. It is hard to describe the peaceful view out the windshield with the float planes bobbing in the water and the ducks swimming around the shore.

We moved to North Pole Alaska today after topping off with diesel at Safeway for $2.78 a gallon, the lowest prices we will see for awhile down through Canada and western Washington. Our last night in the Fairbanks area will be at Santaland RV Park.

We did go back to Fairbanks for some last minute shopping and to visit Frontierland, a theme park that depicts frontier life in the north. Several of Fairbank’s original buildings have been moved to the park and are used as museums and shops.

Jeff spent time at the Frontier Museum of Flight which includes a lot of wreckage from the many accidents the harsh land and climate caused. The taming of Alaska’s vastness is real testament to the dedication of the early aviators up here.

We have been following the Reiters, Brewers, Russ Mahoney as well as all the other Forum members who have described their trips to Alaska and helped us plan our trip. Tonight was just one more example of the benefit of having all this help as we followed Betty Brewer’s advice and looked up the Pad Thai Restaurant in Fairbanks for a great meal.

After dinner we had some fun capitalizing on the Visitor’s Bureau webcam at Golden Heart Plaza by waving to our granddaughters as we talked to them on cellphones. Another RV Forum friend who lived here clued us in on this little tidbit, thanks Don.

This marks the farthest point north we will go on this trip. Starting tomorrow we are headed south to the lower 48 but we still have a lot to see and do on our way back.
