Day 46 & 47 On the Road to Seattle

We learned Tuesday morning we have to be in Illinois by the end of the month so we have cut short our planned itinerary and have been driving for two days through Tok to Haines Junction down in the Yukon. We are headed to Seattle from where we will fly to Chicago.

We spent last night in Tok at the Gateway Salmon Bake and had grilled salmon and Halibut again. It was just as good as it was last month and certainly was right up there with the best we had while in Alaska.

Today we got the worst of the ALCAN behind us in Upper Yukon between the Alaskan border and Haines Junction. Our route down to Washington will be a shorter trip down the Cassiar (Route 37) that has more gravel stretches than the ALCAN but is very scenic and 100 miles shorter.

We will cover what was to have taken three weeks in 6 days so it will not be a sightseeing trip! In two days we have gone from buying diesel in Fairbanks with a Safeway discount at $2.75 to $4.45 a gallon here in Haines Junction. Fortunately we do not need fuel here but will fill up in Teslin for about $3.85 a gallon.

We do plan to see a couple of our original stops. We will spend tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning in Whitehorse and then head down the Cassiar to Hyder for a quick look at the bears and the drive in and out of Hyder/Stewart.
