Day 52 Bears!

We awoke this morning to light rain and decided to have breakfast at the King Edward Hotel in Stewart before heading up to Fish Creek to check on the bears. Because it was so late we were not sure we would have any more luck than we did yesterday afternoon but could always go back this evening. We arrived at the bear viewing platform in time to learn that the sow and her three cubs had been up the stream a short while ago but were gone. Even though it was misting we decided to walk out to the end of the platform and look around. We had been there about 20 minutes when mom and the cubs reappeared and proceed to work up and down the stream trying to catch the few spawning chum salmon that had arrived.

The cubs are 1½ years old and didn’t seem to be quite adept at catching salmon yet. Because the salmon had just arrived they are still fresh and swim very well. In a week or so they will begin to die and become quite sedentary and an easier catch for the cubs,Mom meanwhile was hunting and lunging at salmon as they swam by and had the cubs placed in the water around her in what seemed a way to trap the salmon. We watched this for a half hour before they worked their way downstream and out of sight. After talking to the Forest Service volunteers we got in the CRV and headed back to town. We hadn’t gone more than a ¼ mile before a black bear casually walked across the road in front of us and headed into the trees. We didn't have time to get a photo of the black bear so we headed on to town.A mile later we came upon a car with a large male grizzly bear walking around it. The driver did not display much sense when he kept driving alongside the bear with his window rolled down to take photos. The bear was obviously becoming more and more irritated as this went on for a mile or more. One of the Forest Service people came up behind us on a four wheeler and kept us and the other cars behind us back a couple of hundred feet but could not do anything about the driver up by the bear. This went on until we reached the edge of Hyder and the bear started into the woods. As he did a local dog showed up and chased him out of sight. Our bear sightings for the day were over.

The best time for bear watching is early in the morning and around 8:30PM but it is raining tonight so we passed on another trip up to Fish Creek and had an outstanding dinner at the Bitter Creek Café in Stewart.

We will be leaving in the morning.
